Why the Hell Not?

For reasons I don’t truly understand, but I suspect are somehow related to the boredom that comes with five continuous months of unemployment, I decided to get this here blog.

There really isn’t such a thing as a good first blog post, is there? I don’t think I’ve read a single one, not even from the most talented writers I know, that hasn’t come off as at least somewhat contrived. Seeing as I do not consider myself much of a writer, I cannot expect that this post will be any better.

So, I suppose, an introduction is in order. As I previously stated, I’ve been unemployed for five months. Prior to that, I was working as a chemical engineer in the research and development department of a mid-sized corporation specializing in the production of sound-damping materials for the automotive and construction industries. Did I make you nod off by forcing you to read that? That’s about the way I felt about it. Fortunately for me, they laid me off before I was able to quit, and so the government has so kindly subsidized my job/career search for the past five months. I want to go to graduate school for epidemiology (basically, the scientific study of health and disease as it effects a population) next year, but those plans will have to wait until the following year after I’ve taken a few more classes.  In the meantime, if you know of any jobs that will take someone with a science degree that doesn’t involve such concepts as “laboratory,” “chemicals,” “engineering,” or anything else remotely related to my degree or my previous employment, please let me know. I can type very quickly!

Now that that yawnfest is out of the way, allow me to tell you a bit about what I care about, and what I hope this blog will come to be about. I am either ardently passionate or completely apathetic about American politics, depending on the day. I train for and run marathons, not because I particularly enjoy running or because I’m competitive, but because it seems to be the thing that keeps me in shape. I sing in a relatively well-known choir here in Chicago, as well as in a couple of smaller ensembles. I belong in a late-night bowling league that makes me happy even though it prevents me from getting a decent night’s sleep at least one school night a week. I’m dating someone twice my age. At any given point I’m probably listening to classical music. I love impractical shoes. I have a nice rack. I don’t know a damn thing about pop culture after around 1999. I will probably write about any and all of these things at some point.

That’s about all I have to say for now. Future posts will hopefully be a little less random.

Happy reading!
